What metadata is and why you would remove it

Metadata is a service record inside the file, written by the device or the software that made it. A phone photo stores the coordinates of the shot, the camera model and the exact time; a Word document stores the author, whoever edited it last and how many minutes were spent on it; a video stores the date, the device and the name of the editing software. None of these lines show up when you simply open the file.

The problem is that the record travels with the file. Email, a messenger set to «send as file», a classifieds board, a cloud link, an archive — in all of these the recipient downloads the original in full. Cleaning removes the service block and leaves the content itself untouched.

What gets removed in each format

Every file type gets its own method — the one that does not damage the content.

    Format What we remove How
JPEG EXIF with GPS coordinates and camera model, IPTC, XMP, text comments, embedded thumbnail Byte level, no re-encoding
PNG Text chunks tEXt, zTXt, iTXt, embedded EXIF, timestamp Byte level, no re-encoding
DOCX · XLSX · PPTX Author, last person to edit, time spent on the document, organisation, custom properties Document properties rewritten
PDF Author, title, subject, keywords, producing application, dates Service block rebuilt
MP3 ID3 tags — artist, album, comment — and the embedded cover art Audio not re-compressed
MP4 · MOV Date and place of the shot, device model, editing software name Video not re-compressed

We deliberately keep the ICC colour profile in images: it says nothing about you, but without it the picture looks noticeably washed out on some screens.

How to remove metadata in four steps

    Upload the file

Drag the file into the upload area, or click it and pick the file manually. The free plan handles up to 3 files at a time.

    Wait for processing

Cleaning runs on the server. For a photo or a document it takes a fraction of a second, for video a few seconds — we do not rebuild the content from scratch.

    Download the result

A «Download» link appears next to the file name. With several files you also get a «Download all (ZIP)» button for a single archive.

    Send the clean copy

Your original stays on your own device untouched. Publish or forward the cleaned copy instead.

    Frequently asked questions

No. Without an account you get 5 photos, documents or PDFs per day and 3 audio or video files, up to 3 files per upload. Signing up and Premium raise those limits and the maximum file size.

No. JPEG and PNG are edited at byte level without decoding the image: pixels, frame size and colours stay exactly the same. MP3 and video are repackaged into a new container without re-compressing the tracks. A cleaned file is usually slightly smaller — by the size of the data removed.

JPEG, PNG, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, PDF, MP3, MP4 and MOV. The file type is detected from the content rather than the extension, so a renamed file is still recognised correctly.

The file is only needed to perform the cleanup. We do not keep your files, do not look inside them and do not pass them to anyone. The result is available to you alone through a private link and is served once.

Yes. Drop them together — each is processed separately, and you can download them one by one or all at once as a single ZIP archive.

The easiest check is the file properties in your system: on Windows right-click, «Properties», the «Details» tab; on macOS open Preview and the inspector. On a cleaned file those fields are empty. You can also upload the result here again — there will be nothing left to strip.
