How to remove the location tag from a photo

Picture an ordinary situation: you are selling a sofa and photograph it in your flat. The ad goes up without a phone number and under a made-up name, so you seem to have given nothing away. Yet the photo carries a service record inside the file, and in that record sits a point on the map accurate to your building entrance.

The same happens with a document photographed on the kitchen table, a product shot taken at the office, or a portrait made at home. The file tells more about itself than its author intended. Here is exactly what it says and how to remove it in a minute.

What your phone actually records

The service block inside a photo is called EXIF. With location services enabled for the camera, the set of fields looks roughly like this:

  • GPSLatitude — 55° 45' 20.9" N, latitude accurate to fractions of a second;
  • GPSLongitude — 37° 37' 2.3" E, longitude;
  • GPSAltitude — height above sea level, precise enough to tell floors apart;
  • DateTimeOriginal — 2026:08:14 19:42:07, the moment of capture down to the second;
  • Make and Model — Apple, iPhone 15 Pro;
  • Software — the firmware or editor version the photo passed through.

One second of latitude is about thirty metres; a tenth of a second is roughly three. This is not "a district of the city" — it is a specific building. With several photos taken on different days, the dates and coordinates reconstruct a routine: home, work, gym.

Who really sees the coordinates

Large social networks usually strip EXIF from the copy they serve to visitors. Hence a common misconception: "I downloaded my own photo from the feed, there was no metadata, so I am fine." That check only proves the platform cleaned its shop window — it received and stored the original file with every coordinate intact.

And there are channels where the file travels through untouched, exactly as you sent it:

  • messengers, when a photo is sent "as a file" rather than "as a photo": no compression is applied and metadata survives in full;
  • email attachments — a mail server strips nothing;
  • cloud links and file-sharing services — a link downloads the original;
  • classifieds and forums that keep the source file;
  • archives: nobody processes files packed inside a zip;
  • the recipient's messenger, if they forward your file onward — the metadata travels with it.

How to strip the location tag, step by step

  1. Open the Metadata remover — no sign-up required.
  2. Drag the photo onto the upload area, or click it and pick a file. You can add several at once: up to 3 files per run on the free plan.
  3. Wait until a "Download" link appears next to the file name. For a photo that takes a fraction of a second — cleaning runs on the server and needs no re-encoding.
  4. Click "Download" and you get the file under the same name with a clean- prefix. With several files, a "Download all as ZIP" button appears.
  5. Publish or send the cleaned file. Your original, coordinates and all, stays with you untouched.

The result is served once: after you download it, the cleaned copy is deleted from the server. If you closed the tab by accident, simply upload the file again.

What happens to quality

Nothing. This is not a re-save through an editor, where the picture is decoded and compressed again, losing detail. We cut the service segments out of the file byte by byte without touching the compressed image data: the pixels stay exactly the same, dimensions and colours do not change, and there is no second round of compression.

The one thing we deliberately keep is the embedded ICC colour profile. It describes how to display colours, carries no information about you, and without it the photo looks noticeably paler or colder on some screens. Everything else — camera, lens, serial number, date, author, editing software, coordinates, text comments and IPTC fields — is removed.

The file usually shrinks by a few dozen kilobytes. That is the metadata and the embedded preview thumbnail — the very one that in older editors sometimes preserved the frame as it looked before cropping.

How to confirm the tag is gone

On Windows: right-click the file → Properties → the Details tab. The original will list the camera, the date and, if you scroll, GPS latitude and longitude. For the cleaned file that list is empty.

On macOS: open the file in Preview, then Tools → Show Inspector. The original gets a tab with a map and a pin; the cleaned file simply does not have that tab.

A quick check with nothing to install: upload the cleaned file to us again. If you are signed in, the account history will show no removed-fields note next to that second upload — there was nothing left to remove.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do screenshots or images from the internet contain coordinates? Usually not — GPS is written by a camera. But they often keep the editor name, a date and IPTC author fields, so cleaning them is still worthwhile.
  • Is cropping enough? No. Cropping changes pixels while the service block stays untouched — coordinates survive any crop.
  • Is screenshotting the photo a solution? You lose quality and resolution, and gain the metadata of the device that took the screenshot. Cleaning the original is simpler.
  • What about sending it "as a photo" in a messenger? Compression usually eats the metadata, but you cannot rely on it: behaviour differs between apps and versions, and "as a file" strips nothing at all.
  • How many photos can I clean? The free plan allows 5 photos a day and 3 files per run; Premium raises the limits and adds ZIP downloads.
